1. Smeg BCC02
This sleek, compact, and striking machine, created by the Milan-based firm Deep Design combines the brand's retro aesthetic with cutting-edge technology. It handles every step of the coffee-making process - from grinding beans and then tamping the beans into a puck to making milk into a texturing process and dispenses the right amount - so you can make barista-quality hot beverages with the click of the button.
The machine also has an elegant brushed aluminium front and is available in a choice of black, red or taupe, so it's easy to integrate into most kitchen designs. It's not without faults, however: most users found it to be a bit expensive for a bean to cup maker (and it doesn't come with an milk pitcher).
There were also many glowing reviews of the quality of the coffee and the ease of using this machine. The intuitive digital display provides step-by-step guidance and feedback throughout the coffee making process, helping you improve your coffee every time. It will even alert you to alter the grind size if it's not enough. It's like having your own personal barista at home (minus Elon Musk's rocket building abilities and Harry Potter's invisibility cape).
If you like milky drinks this model has an adjustable steam wand that can be adjusted in both directions to accommodate all drinking vessels, but not a Viking's drinking horn. We were impressed by the speed and effectiveness of the frothing process as well. It creates an excellent, full-flavoured, delicious espresso with a fantastic crema.
The BCC02 is a fantastic all-rounder. It's quiet and efficient, and provides excellent value for money at the current price of PS499. Its only real flaw is that it does not offer the same level customisation as other bean-to-cup machines we have examined. Its pump has 15 bars instead of the usual 19 bars. This is not enough for producing top-quality espressos. Other than that it's a fantastic machine to make coffee for those who like their coffee strong and black. 2. Melitta Barista TS Smart
The Barista TS Smart comes with a variety of features that differentiate it from the rest of the competitors. Its most distinctive feature could be the fact that it is able to be controlled by your smartphone via the Melitta Connect App. This allows you to change settings and dispense different coffee recipes that are stored within the machine itself.
This makes the machine extremely flexible and adaptable to your preferences. There are a variety of options for varying the intensity of your drinks, as well as different sizes of cups and even whether or not to add milk. The machine has two airtight containers of beans that are automatically chosen to accommodate different tastes. It will default to standard espresso beans in one and cafe cream (a German variation of long black or flat white) in the other, but you can choose the beans you prefer. There is also a chute for pre-ground beans if you prefer to make your own.
Users have also said they are impressed with the speed of the machine. They've said that it can make their drinks faster than other machines they've used. Another bonus is that the machine will alert you when one of its hoppers is about to be empty, so you don't get caught out by running out of your preferred drink.
The price could be a problem for certain. The machine isn't inexpensive, with prices that are close to PS999. However, it is far cheaper than comparable Jura machines with the same number of features.
The Barista TS Smart is backed up by an impressive warranty, which provides two years of protection. This is longer than the standard one-year guarantee, so it is a great sign of confidence from the manufacturer. It also includes a cleaning tablet and a descaler, making it easy to stay on top of the machine's maintenance requirements. This is a fantastic machine for those who want to purchase a top-quality, multi-functional bean to cup machine for a reasonable price.
