2. De'Longhi Stilosa
The De'Longhi Stilosa manual espresso machine is a well-rounded, budget-friendly option that is ideal for beginners and coffee enthusiasts. It's user-friendly, looks nice on the counter, and produces great espresso, cappuccinos and lattes. However, it has a few drawbacks that should be taken into consideration.
The Stilosa scored below average for its brew control and quality in our brewing metrics. This was due to the small size of the filter baskets and lack of temperature control, both of which make it difficult to alter the extraction process. We liked that this machine is quick to heat up and that the spout can be adjusted to a suitable height.
The unit also has a water reservoir that can hold up to 34 ounces. It has a built in level indicator to let you know when to refill. It is removable, which can be useful if you need to clean it or don't have access to a sink. It also has a drip pan that is removable, which allows you to use taller cup sizes underneath the spout.
Stilosa was also a disappointment when it came to our steaming metrics. This was due to its insufficient control of the temperature of the steam and the absence of pre-infusion functions. Both of these are standard features in machines that cost much more. Despite its shortcomings, we appreciated the fact that it's easy to maintain and comes with a 1-year warranty. The De'Longhi Stilosa is a great addition to a home coffee bar. It's a little simpler to use than other models we've tried and will save you money over the cost of cafe drinks.
3. Breville Barista Express Impress
The Breville Express Impress Barista (that's quite a mouthful, wouldn't you agree?) This machine is intended for people who are new who are interested in espresso. This single boiler, pumps-driven machine was designed to make it easy for anyone to pull an espresso shot without sacrificing flavor or brewing consistency.
First of all, it takes the guesswork out of changing the grinder, tamper, and brew group settings using its simple-to-use controls. You can also choose between single or double shots and choose the desired temperature. A built-in thermocoil heating system guarantees that your espresso will be ready in less than 30 seconds which is considerably quicker than the half hour that most traditional single boiler machines take to get to temperature.
Another feature that is important is the "impressive" dosing and tamping mechanism that works with the tamper in order to adjust the correct amount of ground coffee per shot. The system utilizes sensors to determine the basket depth and adjusts how much ground coffee is dispensed. If you're a little less confident in the ability to control the size of the grind, water temperature and dosing, the machine has a variety of presets that can help.
The Barista Express Impress also comes with the well-known single hole steam wand, which can produce some pretty stunning latte art. It's the same wand you will find in Breville's more advanced, high-end Barista Express models, and it's a great tool.
I'm not one to advocate for coffee shortcuts, fully automatic machines or even pods but the Impress does professional espresso machine what it sets out to do without being too difficult or removing the enjoyment of making a good shot of espresso. I'm happy with that and I'm giving it a thumbs-up!
4. Diletta Mio
The Diletta Mio makes a great alternative for home baristas who are adamant about quality, design and user-friendliness. Its sleek aesthetic, professional-grade components and constant performance make it a conversation piece in your coffee area. Beginners will also benefit from this machine, as it allows them to learn about espresso and steaming without having to think about programming or complexity.
One of the most impressive aspects of this machine is its brew boiler controlled by PID, which ensures rapid warm-up times and stable water temperature. This is essential, especially for espresso, because even minor changes in water temperature can alter the taste and quality of the espresso.
The Diletta's steaming thermoblock is another feature that stands out. It allows you to steam milk and brew espresso at simultaneously. This is a huge time-saver, and it helps to ensure that your milk has the right texture for your drinks. This can save energy since it only requires energy when it is needed.
This machine also has an indicator of pressure at the head of the group, which is a nice touch that lets you monitor the pressure of your extraction in real-time. You can adjust the OPV to fine-tune your extraction, giving you an option of personalization that's typically reserved for much more expensive machines.
Other important features of the Diletta include its easy-to-clean accessible water tank on the side and its energy-saving mode, which is adjustable in increments of 10 minutes to two hours. The boiler wrap is insulated, which reduces heat loss. Its dual-temperature system minimizes static electricity, which results in less waste and lower energy costs.
Some users have complained about the lengthy repair times and poor durability of this machine. In addition, some have received poor customer service from Diletta and have experienced difficulties resolving warranty issues.
5. Jura E8
This top-quality super-automatic machine provides an array of specialty drinks that can be made at the push of a single button. It can also make ristrettos, cappuccinos, macchiatos, flat whites and teas along with plain hot chocolate, plain coffee and plain espresso. Its modern brewing technology and elegant color display are only some of the features that set this machine apart from other machines.
The E8 utilizes the Aroma G3 grinder to grind beans quickly and accurately. It has eight grind settings, which might seem like a lot if you compare it to other super-automatics which have only three or four. The higher setting allows you to control the size and consistency, which is crucial to a perfect cup.
The Jura E8 is equipped with a powerful burr grinder and an advanced pre-infusion process. These two components are the reason for an espresso cup that is consistently of high-quality. The PEP process uses short bursts of water to push the coffee through the grinder, allowing full flavor extraction. The coffee is more full and more flavorful than instant coffee that is made using the Keurig.
The Jura E8 can make a variety of drinks, and it does this extremely well. It produces excellent, strong espresso and a smooth and silky cappuccino. The only drawback is that it's not able to make the latte. This requires a high-pressure steam boiler in order to create a thick, foamy foam.
Like many super automated machines that are available, this one requires a bit of maintenance however it is relatively easy to keep clean. It will descale automatically and self-clean after every use. It is easy to program it to do more thorough cleaning at least every year, or at least twice. It will also remind you to change the filter every 80 drinks.
